I have had my messenger bag for about 10yrs I take it with me everyday. I am leaving this review because I want another bag but cannot part with my old one so I keep looking. My bag is custom black with red piping with a computer bag inside and the zipper pocket thingy. I wash it by hand every six months or so. Seriously best bag I have ever owned I am 52 years old.
I've been using my zero messenger consistently for over 5 years and it's still in fantastic shape. It's uncomplicated and customizable. It's adaptable.
I couldn't think of a a bad thing to say about this product or the company if I really tried.
Bag was, and still is fantastic. Great design and customization options. I was a little worried about things falling out since the bag usually sits a bit sideways but I haven't had an issue in the year or so I have had mine for (and this is without the optional straps).
I ordered the HALO strip with the bag and though it took 3 tries until I actually received that piece, the customer service was quick to reply and persistent with sending one through separately (and this is to Australia).
My only complaint is with the HALO strip which is from a separate company anyway: it doesn't light up very evenly throughout the strip and is pretty dull overall.
Keep up the good work Rickshaw.
I have never been disappointed in a Rickshaw product. They are water proof, strong, fashionable and obviously very durable as mine have been traveling around for years now. I think if I had any thing negative to say is that they do not have camera and lens inserts to go along with their bags. That said I can get inserts at Rei or other stores. So it is not a big deal. You will not go wrong with your purchase.
I am ready to buy my third bag. I picked mine up on a trip to San Francisco a year ago. Found it to be the most useful bag ever, especially for traveling. Bought a 2nd solid black one a couple months ago and buying a summer navy with red stripe soon. It's amazing how much fits in these bags. Prefer them over bagpacks which are often banned from museums, stadiums, but fit just as much. Got the simple inside pouch for my keys which is very helpful. Picky but hopefully helpful... Something thing I would change is the actual little square rubber Rickshaw logo placed on the front of the bags. Somehow it cheapens the look of the bag-- the rubber and the font. Perhaps a nice looking Univers font capital R? Also, the crossover strap eventually pils my sweaters-- is there some sort of chamois-type thing than can be inconspicuously added to the underside of the strap where it hits your chest? And also can the straps come in Navy or some other color besides black? Anyway, truly love the bag. Buy it you won't regret it.
I found this bag while desperately hunting for a good commuter bag. At the time, my main source of transport was bike so I needed something not only affordable and comfortable, but sturdy and weatherproof too. I learned that Rickshaw was handmade in the US from recycled material, AND customizable for a screamin' deal. Sold!
I purchased my Medium Zero Messenger in customized grey tweed with an additional waterproof lining and large zip velcro pouch and still paid less than most other major brand messenger bags. I tend to think that my bag is so much better looking than the competitions' as well--but I am biased.
Getting down to the point. For value, you can't beat the price of this product. Go for the extras, it's worth the (tiny) amount of extra money. I have spilled water bottles, foodstuffs, and adult beverages in the bag and it has not leaked ONCE. I am very accident prone with spills and the waterproof liner was worth the investment. No leaks on my back or clothes, just flip it inside out, clean, and leave to air dry.
Durability: Again, I've had this bag three years and was not even close to gentle with it. It's been through snow and rain and sweat and acted as my main bookbag for college throughout it all. It's been on countless outdoor adventures and grocery trips. The corners are not as spiffy as they once were, but other than that it's still awesome and the velcro holds that flap down just like day one.
Comfort: I've always maintained that wearing this bag is like being hugged from behind. I'm a shorter lady with broad shoulders so it's been challenging to find comfortable bags. This bag has toted some HEAVY loads of books, groceries, goodies, what have you with no problem. The adjustable strap lets you fit the back to your body when accounting for larger or smaller loads super easy--you can even adjust one handed and it's a breeze.
Design: This is one of my favorite features, and it's something you might not notice. At the corners, the bag has these beautiful origami-like folds that tuck into the sides of the bag. Not only does it look beautiful, but it allows the bag to expand even more if need be (trust me, I've tried it). Plus, you get to pick your own colors and features if you want. Case closed.
If you're on the fence, just get this bag. I've had it for three years and it's lasted through college, moves, and even some relationships. I love it more as time goes on.
This is one of the best bags I've ever used. The pockets and storage compartments are all placed and sized perfectly. Travelled coast to coast, stopping in several places in between and this bag was always comfortable, easy to access. The shoulder strap adjustment was fast and secure. My only regret is that I did not get the large size, then I can carry all my gear, files and clothes for short 2-3 day trips.
This is an excellent bag overall. I ordered mine with waxed black canvas, which tends to pick up lint, but looks classier than ballistic nylon. It fits a 13" MacBook Pro perfectly with plenty of room for a Moleskine and a DSLR. My only suggestion would be to swap the location of the strap clasp from the top of the left shoulder to under the right, as it would make adjusting the strap length easier with the left hand as opposed to having to take it off, adjust, and put it back on. But that's a minor quibble. I'm very happy with this bag!
I ordered a custom zero messenger (medium) and it arrived yesterday. I used it the first time this morning on my walk commute (10 min walk, 30 min bus and 15 min walk). It is great. I love the amount of space it has and the convenience of being 'hands free'. The bag is well made and customer service is great. I will be ordering again from Rickshaw. Thanks!
I realized I hadn't reviewed my Zero medium, yet... and I've had it for about a year now! LOVE this bag. It is showing no signs of wear, after a year of almost daily use that included bike commuting in inclement weather, sunshine, being thrown on many floors, and travel in cars, planes, and trains. I really does look brand new.
I *strongly* recommend messaging the staff directly about special needs. They were perfectly happy to have waterproof liner and a blinky light strap added (before these were regular offerings). It's lightweight, yet I have never had a problem fitting my entire load. In fact, if I ever load it so full it's uncomfortable to carry, it's a sign to me that it's not the right day to bike commute. I do NOT have the extra straps. I find I don't miss them- if the bag is so full it can't be held by the velcro, it's probably not the day to bike. Perhaps I would add them if I got another one, if I could have the SHHH! option.
When bike commuting, I can load:
-lunch in a tiffin or Mr. Bento lunchbox,
-my bike lock and cable which fit perfectly in the front pocket,
-my work calendar
-an extra shirt and sweater
-my wallet and a little girlie bag
-a Kindle touch
-(not every day) my macbook in its sleeve.
-I also keep the deluxe drop pocket in there all the time.
I did a grey exterior with purple piping and turquoise interior. I love the pops of color. I've taken it as my "personal item" on several flights. Because it's small and squshy, it's never been challenged.
All in all, the big drawback is that it's so well made that I have no opportunity to buy another one. So I'm looking at the folios and will probably have a custom folio made soon!
I wish the Market Tote would come back. I didn't like the image, but if a plain tote came out, I'd love that for the weekly Farmer's Market ride. Currently, I empty out my Zero to take shopping.
