It's a nice to have, it's not essential.
As long as you haven't over stuffed / weighed down your bag, the strap pad isn't needed as the bag strap isn't uncomfortable. If you do have lots of heavy stuff in your bag, then this will be very useful.

this was a big one for me because the one and only thing i found uncomfortable about my rickshaw bag was the big plastic attachment ring digging into my shoulder. granted, my left shoulder's been broken and dislocated and separated at various points, so it's a little sensitive anyway, but my point is that this completely rectifies that situation, particularly when the bag's really loaded down. bonus — more surface area for pin buttons and decorations! thanks for keeping local SF business alive!

I exchanged the regular quick-adjust strap for a shorter one for my medium zero messenger bag. The original one was still too long when I had it securely tightened when bike commuting. Customer service is amazing and mailed it promptly. While I love the shorter strap for my size as a 5'7" tall woman with a long, thin torso, the only way I can use the strap pad is if I tighten the bag all the way and then put it on. It fits just perfectly between the two quick-adjust clips at that point, however when I put the bag on securely, it supports me across my chest rather than over my shoulder. The cross strap, however, is a must-have and fits perfectly snug at its tightest setting to keep the bag from shifting when riding.
I love all my other add-ons, and the bag itself is amazing, durable and incredibly spacious! I also love my new waterproof sailcloth pipsqueak bag for my handlebars!
