"Made right here in San Francisco, The medium Velo edition backpack is an exercise in minimalist design — sleek, simple, lightweight, black. My goal was to address the essential functionality of the everyday, all-purpose carry-all — nothing less, nothing more. I wanted a casual, yet stylish, alternative to the old-school book bag and the over-built wilderness pack — while still working with technical fabrics rather than canvas and leather.”

I love this backpack. It's been great for commuting in summer heat, with or without a laptop. Holds everything you might need for a day at work -- lunch, umbrella, sweater, notebook, etc -- without looking or feeling bulky. Can fit a bike helmet in it as well. The seatbelt straps are comfortable in my experience although I haven't loaded the bag down too much.

Barely getting started with bag but love it already. A worthy successor to my 2009 Zero 23"—I was looking for something a bit smaller, with more structure and a two-shoulder carry option, and the Velo is perfect.

I found Rickshaw Bagworks by typing 'coolest backpack' into Google. I wanted a backpack because other bags were making me a bit lopsided muscle-wise on my back because I carry books around. And I've a kickbike I do a bit of commuting on. But I didn't want some ugly thing (hence the Google search). I got to customize mine as part of a special; I love the graphite performance tweed/moss green interior look. The medium size suits me just fine, big enough for all my stuff (including books) without being huge on my back. In my opinion, it combines being well made and well thought out with being a nicely understated but classy looking packpack - not so easy to achieve I wouldn't have thought. Arrived quickly considering it had to make its way across oceans to Australia, I thought I'd be waiting much longer. Thanks guys!

I love this bag as much as I thought I would! I saw it on a stranger and promptly ordered one. Heavy duty quality everything but end result is lightweight.

One suggestion: the robust zipper leaves a bit of a gap where the pulls join. This might just be a dream but if the same zipper could be made to close more snugly, the waterproofing would be perfect.

I also would love some way to creatively and securely attach a water bottle to the outside so it would not take up inside room. Don't really like to 'biner it to the back tabs as then it swings annoyingly.

The real and only reason I did not give 5 stars: the standard straps are short and this is gonna be a problem in winter when I wear puffy jackets. I am at the end of the strap wearing it over t-shirts now. I am a 5'6" average size woman with short arms so I can't imagine how this works for a big guy! I'll try it and I guess if it doesn't fit I will send it in and ask Rickshaw to customize it for me in that way. I really like the seatbelt type straps generally. Not as bulky as regular padded backpack.

I love this backpack. It is great for everyday commuting and big enough to swing a weekend trip (although I like it so much I'm planning to get the bigger version as well). If, like me, you tend to throw everything in the biggest pocket of your bag and let it sink to the bottom, it can be a little annoying, because you have to dig in from the top. But there are several smaller compartments, so if you're a more organized person that's less of an issue. Looks very small for how much you can cram into it. I find the seatbelt straps comfortable enough if not perfect; if you're carrying a lot of weight you might want the deluxe straps.

Story

About VELO:

The medium VELO edition backpack features a sleek, minimalist design, inspired by everyday urban travel. High-quality YKK water-resistant urethane zippers provide easy access to the main compartment and outside organizational pocket. The shoulder straps are fashioned from supple seatbelt webbing and the base is padded for comfort. The Velo Collection is made from scratch in our own San Francisco workshop.

About Design:

"For the Velo Collection, I removed the 'flap' and replaced the traditional 'clip and rip', with a simple 'zip'. I love the convenient, quiet access these zippers provide — they're just perfect for quickly accessing your stuff when you're seated on a plane, train or bus. Zip it open, zip it shut — simple as that — and, the glossy water-resistant zippers protect your belongings from the elements. The seat belt webbing straps are comfortable, without all the fuss of the structured straps common on traditional outdoor gear. I'd been using my medium Velo edition Backpack prototype on my daily bicycle commute and airplane trips the six months prior to launching, and it's everything I need."
