These buckles aren't that useful in practice. I imagined (and the sales rep told me) they would allow me to overstuff my bag, allowing me to stuff things in that would normally prevent the flap from closing. However, the straps are so short, that if the top flap can't reach the velcro, it can't reach the straps.
It would be much more useful if the straps were twice as long, that way I could stuff a large jacket, yoga mat, etc. on top of my already-full bag and still have the straps hold it in place. As it is, they merely serve to back-up the velcro (which can be handy on occasion).
For smaller bags such as the Zero Small, I think these are great and keep the bag from bursting open. I'm also paranoid and like an extra line of security when walking about with my bag.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend adding the buckles to your bag unless you plan on strapping a jacket or yoga mat across your bag. The buckles (when unclipped) hang down and look a bit funny on the bag. In general the velcro is probably sufficient for most trips across town.
These buckles were definitely the extra protection I needed to reassure me that my belongings were safely ticked inside my bag! While the velcro is super strong, the buckles are even better. Plus I think they make my bag look great.
I don't know why these aren't a mandatory component of the Zero Messenger bags. It keeps the flap completely secure, which the velcro strip in the middle alone doesn't do. It also helps keep my bag together when I've stuffed it to the brim.
